While most roofing companies do honest work, there are people posing as legit roofers trying to make a quick buck by scamming unwary homeowners. Today, we’re taking a look at the most common roofing scams so you know enough to steer clear of them and keep your roof (and money) safe.
These fake roofers tend to show up to your front door, usually after a storm has recently passed by your area (hence the name). They will offer good roof repair deals and offer them at conveniently low prices. However, when they get your money, they book it out of the area. To avoid them, limit your choices to local contractors with actual local addresses.
Roofers get more out of bigger projects. Unfortunately, there are roofers who exploit this by creating a bigger problem for the homeowners. They will purposely damage the roof (usually during the preliminary inspection) so that the homeowner will be forced to pay for a bigger project. To avoid this, always be with the inspector and watch out for them trying to do things like taking out more shingles than necessary or attempting to make leak holes bigger.
Some scammers will try to lure you in by offering to cover your insurance deductible or offer free incentives. This will allow them to bill your insurance company so you have to pay less. However, the incentive actually comes from the surplus of money coming from the insurance company, plus they pocket the rest of it. You can avoid this by not hiring any contractor who offers any form of insurance deductibles or incentives.
Payment Under Pressure
There are also roofing scammers who will try to secure payment upfront. They usually ask for a downpayment of more than 15%, if not an outright full payment. Once they get the money, they either do a substandard job or outright disappear. The best way to avoid falling for this is to refuse any contractors that ask for more than a 15% downpayment.
